This is a rattlesnake. Avoid them at all costs. Stay away and stomp on the ground if you see one. You cannot depend on hearing their rattle. If bitten, you have about three hours to get medical help and anti-venom medicine, before it becomes serious. Stay calm and don’t over exert yourself.
Wildlife Wisdom: In Colorado, look for these animals in the wild – prairie rattlesnakes, mountain lions, and black bears.

Wow, this is scary considering my friend’s daughter is attending college there and she’s from here, LA, and has no ideal to look for them. I hope the school gives out a safety brief on this. I saw her recently post pictures of her in the woods. Sheesh! Oh and funny, my mother was born in Colorado.
Hi Erika, thank you for your comments. Unless the young lady you are referring to spends time in the mountains, camping, hiking or horseback riding, I wouldn’t worry too much. I will say that occasionally rattlesnakes do find their way into gardens and yards, but they generally stay in the underbrush near trails. Why not ask her if her social activities are in the forest? And if yes, caution her about the wild animals. Your mom probably has encountered all of them. BTW, you and I are both writers. I have not advertised myself much, but please read my “About” page. You have quite a remarkable portfolio. What is your favorite genre to write? Maggie Parks🌸🤓
